Passion for Social Development and Mental Well-Being
Hailing from Colombo, Asmiyas Saheed has dedicated his life to social development and mental health advocacy. With over two decades of experience, he has become a trusted figure in the field of counseling and social work in Sri Lanka. His journey began in 2005 when he joined the National Institute of Social Development (NISD) as a Training Officer. Over the years, he has risen to the position of Senior Training Officer, training and mentoring professionals across various sectors. A National Leader in Counseling and Training As a National-level Trainer, Asmiyas has played a pivotal role in educating and guiding government officers across multiple fields. His expertise extends to training Police Officers, Social Workers, Teachers, Community Correction Officers, Welfare Officers in prison departments, and professional counselors. He has also imparted valuable skills to Psycho-social Officers in numerous NGOs, helping them make a positive impact in their communities. Currently, Asmiyas serves as the Director of the Research and Publication Division at NISD, where he oversees several critical research studies aimed at enhancing social development and mental health practices. His leadership in this field has earned him a reputation for driving meaningful change through evidence-based approaches.

Educational Background and Professional Contributions
Asmiyas holds a BA from the University of Peradeniya and has furthered his academic credentials with a Master of Social Work specializing in Community Development from India. He also completed an MPhil with a specialization in Mental Health from Bharathiar University, India. His academic foundation, combined with extensive field experience, makes him one of the most respected counselors and trainers in Sri Lanka. In addition to his work at NISD, Asmiyas is a lecturer, offering his expertise in Psychology and Counseling courses. He is a visiting lecturer at the University of Colombo, South Eastern University, and the Open University of Sri Lanka, where he serves as a resource person for students and professionals alike.

Asmiyas Saheed’s commitment to mental health extends beyond the classroom and training sessions. For many years, he has been a prominent voice in Sri Lanka’s National Radio Service, conducting counseling programs on family and child development.
